Driving behavior monitoring strengthens safety culture

Neste continuously monitors the driving performance of its contract partners responsible for light fuel transportation and publishes the results quarterly. By monitoring driving behavior, Neste ensures that safety is not only emphasized but also systematically measured, tracked, and developed together with its partners.
In January 2026, Väli-Suomen Säiliöliikenne Oy achieved the best driving behavior index among Neste’s contract partners in light fuel transportation. Chemline Group owns 50% of Väli-Suomen Säiliöliikenne Oy and is responsible for the operational side of transport and shares company management together with Pironetti Oy.

The driving behavior index measures how well drivers anticipate traffic and avoid sudden situations. Proactive driving reduces risks and strengthens transport safety. According to Neste’s Transport Manager, Markku Tiilola, driving behavior plays a particularly important role in the transport of dangerous goods.

“Above all, driver anticipation has an extremely significant impact on safety. Drivers must read traffic as far ahead as possible to avoid sudden situations,” says Tiilola.

According to him, good driving behavior can prevent accidents entirely or significantly reduce their consequences.

Driving performance improved through leadership and commitment

Chemline’s top ranking in January reflects long-term work where safe driving has been integrated into leadership and daily operations. The result is not a coincidence—it comes from the commitment of both management and drivers to shared goals.

“If we set targets but do not monitor them, results usually do not follow,” Tiilola summarizes.

Neste monitors driving performance at the vehicle level, but Chemline’s management ensures that targets are reflected in the daily work of individual drivers.
Neste’s target for the driving behavior index is 97 out of 100. Chemline raised its own target level directly to 98 and began reviewing results regularly with drivers.

“A KPI should not remain just a number. We started discussing driving behavior and measurement in team meetings and individually with drivers,” says Chemline CEO Miko Ronkainen.

Chemline motivates drivers and rewards results above 98 points. The best individual performance is also recognized separately.

Ronkainen emphasizes that good driving behavior means, above all, managing driving speed according to conditions, anticipating situations, and avoiding sudden braking.

“These are topics we go through repeatedly with drivers, and continuous discussion has gradually changed driving habits.”

Ronkainen also thanks the drivers for their commitment. According to him, monitoring the driving behavior index has created positive internal competition among drivers.

The top ranking in January also indicates that Chemline has systematically improved the quality of its operations. For Neste, the driving behavior index is not just a safety metric but a key part of the overall quality assessment of transport providers.

“Safety is extremely important to us, which is why we also evaluate it in tenders. I am specifically referring to overall safety. In addition to driving behavior, this includes monitoring deviations, incidents, and occupational safety,” Tiilola concludes.
